The eczema employment has become a disease of increasing importance in recent decades because of its consequences, such as frequent rashes, but in particular the risk of prolonged absences from work for illness. Is the conviction of a group of Danish researchers who, on previous studies had found that the heavy impact of disease on quality of life, have tracked about 600 patients suffering from eczema job hunting for predictive risk factors. The disease, the authors state in their research published on Archives of Dermatology, which affects different groups but especially women workers. And in some cases has been suggested its association with depression. But the data, as there are no confirmations influence represented by the socio-economic status.
Eczema namely
For a start, however, is well define the disease. It is a condition that occurs for skin exposure to exogenous substances of chemical nature, physical-chemical or biological environment in professional or outside. The mechanism of irritation, which is manifested by itching and redness, swelling, drip, blisters and peeling, is simply repeated contact with some substances. Examples? Some metals (chromium, nickel, cobalt); drugs for local use (antibiotics, antihistamines), cosmetics (hair dyes, nail enamel); fibers (clothing), substances used at home (detergents, soaps) . These are diseases that, given the substances involved, often some work (butchers, chefs and hairdressers) and with appropriate preventive measures in the workplace could be avoided. But so much so the risk exists and, in many cases, the risk is losing the collateral work for the frequent absences due to illness. Precisely these aspects has occupied the team at the University of Copenhagen. But as we have done the study?
The Danish study
Were considered 758 cases of all patients diagnosed with occupational hand eczema, and recorded by a database of accidents at work in the Danish period from October 1 2001 and November 10 2002. For the subject has undergone a questionnaire with questions on sick leave, problems at work, depression, quality of life and severity by eczema. All were contacted one year away: the whole 621 patients responded to the first questionnaire and 564 (including 386 women) per second. During the period of observation, 25% of patients had had a severe form of eczema or worse, 41% had improved and 34% had experienced little or average change in the situation. The results show how patients with a severe form of eczema employment, especially among butchers, kitchen staff, chefs and hairdressers, are more than 40 years, have a low quality of life and are more at risk of prolonged absences from work (more than five weeks a year) and even to change jobs or remain unemployed. The researchers concluded that there are predictive factors used to implement preventive strategies for risk management. And the patients most at risk are neither young nor with a socio-economic status medium high. And the social condition seems to play a key role as a prognostic factor. How to say that the misfortunes are never alone.
